Former Director of NFED Praises Adaptive Eyeglasses
Adaptive eyeglasses are critical to success of the programNFED is one of the divisions in the ministry of education, science and sports and we have a role as a division to raise the high literacy program that will reduce the illiteracy rate that we have in the country and so Nonformal is a program that we have for the adult learner within the various communities in the country. We actually get out there to contact a good number of people in 15 Ghanaian languages, and these 15 Ghanaian languages is a group of languages that can be used across the country. This is the programme adult from the age of 15 - 45 and above
The history of the adaptive eye glasses came about when we realized that most of our learners in the class found difficulties to read and to write...Transporting them to the eye clinic which are very few within the country would be a problem.
It was during this process that we got the wind of the adaptive eyewear group and these was discussion about how they can easily be able to fit them to learners and not move them to the eye clinic so a number of adaptive eyewear glasses was brought in and some staff members were trained, and we spread out at selected districts and regions and begun the fitting of these glasses these glasses gave some warming to the learners after they were fitted. They could see alphabet and read better than they did before. And they didn't have to strain their eyes because they were aided by the glasses. ....
But all those that have the opportunity we saw greater progress in their reading and writing. Some of them spent more time reading because they could read at ease and not stress themselves up which normally discourage them. Some still used the glasses outside because they had eyewear glasses.
The adaptive glasses are not only used by our learners in the class, they use them for outside class session because once the glasses helps them to see more, they wear them more often than wearing them for reading in the night and this has made many of them quite happy ... People on the whole are happy because they now have glasses to read, write and that is a step forward in their quest to read and write.
Eyeglasses is a critical tool for the promotion of our program because we are dealing with people who are above a certain age and they have tilled in their farms and work in areas which has affected their eyes and the sight of most of these elderly people cannot help them to read unless we aid them with glasses and so it has become a critical or I will say a component that is vital to the success of our literacy program.
NFED at the moment needs more as long as we continue to recruit learners; we need more adaptive eyewear glasses.
