How do adaptive eyeglasses work?

Adaptive eyeglasses employ adlens lens technology. The lenses feature a fluid-filled structure with a flexible surface that changes focus depending on the amount of fluid inside the lens.

Turning the adjuster knob pumps fluid into or out of the lens structure, thereby changing the lens power. Once at the desired power, the user simply seals the lenses and removes the adjusters.

Do the adjusters stay on all the time?

Our adaptive eyeglass adjusters are for one-time use, after which the lenses are sealed and they are permanently removed. After removal, the glasses look essentially normal.

Can adaptive eyeglasses be adjusted multiple times?

The eyeglasses are designed to be adjusted to achieve best correction. The adjusters are then removed.

What vision conditions can adaptive eyeglasses be used?

The original AdSpecs have a spherical power range of -6 to +6 dioptres. This range covers most people with near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hypermetropia) and also work as reading or computer glasses.

Like all ordinary glasses, AdSpecs cannot treat eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Anyone who thinks they may have an eye disease should consult a health professional immediately.

How Long will a pair of adaptive eyeglasses last?

Adaptive eyeglasses have been in use in the field for several years. The outer lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is highly durable and one of the materials used for plastic lenses in traditional glasses. However like all glasses care should be taken in how the glasses are used, stored and cleaned.

Can adaptive eyeglasses come in other frames?

Due to the physics of fluid-filled lenses, the frames must be round or near-round to provide an undistorted image. There is, however, choice in frame colors, materials and sizes.

Are people really able to figure out their own lens powers?

Yes. If the adaptive eyeglasses fitting protocol is followed, users achieve results comparable to the spherical lens powers an eye care professional would prescribe. Please visit the Documents Library for more information.

Where are adaptive eyeglasses in use?

Adaptive eyeglasses have been deployed in an adult literacy project in Ghana funded by the World Bank. Also in Ghana, Adaptive Eyewear is trialing sales of AdSpecs. They have also been deployed in US Government humanitarian missions in Angola, the Republic of Georgia, Morocco, Niger and other African countries.

Where can I buy a pair of Adaptive Eyeglasses?

Currently, we are developing a second generation model, which will be available in 2009. It will only be available in wholesale quantities to the developing world.
